Movie Review Restless Giant By James T. Patterson

Kiana Wade Book Review 6 Nov 2105 Restless Giant, a book written by James T. Patterson, provides us with a concise and historically correct assessment of the time period of the twenty-seven years between the resignation of Richard Nixon and the election of George W. Bush. Patterson makes it a point to provide for us the relational ties between the social, economical, cultural, political aspects of life in America. Patterson begins his narrative by placing us in the â€Å"troubled 70s.† He describes the 1970s as â€Å"grim, tasteless years that are best put out of mind.† (p. 13) The mood of the 1970s was described as gloomy, gaudy and depressing. The issue of race remained the nation’s number one problem. During this time there were only two†¦show more content†¦18) Along with the many racial problems of this time period, there were educational issues, drug abuse problems and rising crime rate. Patterson also talks about the â€Å"moral decline† and the younger generation. He note s that, â€Å"a number of public school seemed out of control,† (p. 45) doing things such as swearing in the classrooms and on the streets, spray painting buildings and using drugs and alcohol. Then there was the topic of sex. â€Å"It seemed to be advancing in the culture almost as rapidly as violence,† says Patterson. Their was a decline in sexual morality. The sexual themes on TV seemed to be advancing. Patterson gives us some examples: Mary Tyler Moore Show and Charlie’s Angels. â€Å"Television shows likes these reflected a sexualizing of the culture.† (p.46) Patterson later talks about the rapid rise in divorce rates and the increase of number of births happening outside of marriage. During this time agitation for women’s rights were at an all time high. Many women began to work and speak out against sexual discrimination. â€Å"All these controversies over sex and family life would have been cause enough for concern even in sunny economic times.† (p. 58) Patterson goes on to discuss the economic problems of this period. The stagflation persisted into the 1980s. This was a result of the structural changes in the economy. It went from a manufacturing base to a post-industrial society that depended on services. The exterior of the Rosicrucian Museum was beautiful — the front of the building’s pillars were so brightly colored and pristine that it really did mimic the exterior of some kind of small palace; the garden and walkway located to the side of the building was also amazing and dense with foliage. The museum’s Set of Canopic Jars, which were cited to have been built during the New Kingdom out of calcite and pigment, are said to have been created solely to hold the internal organs of the deceased within them so that they would remain preserved for eternity. Quite honestly, these jars don’t look too different from modernized urns, though modernized urns certainly don’t keep hold over organs, and instead only contain ashes. Comparing the Living Dead in James Joyces The Dead and...

Dubliners and The Living Dead In his work The Dead, James Joyce utilizes his character Michael Furey, Gretta Conroys deceased love from her youth, as an apparent symbol of how the dead have a steadfast and continuous power over the living. The dominant power which Michael maintains over the protagonist, Gabriel Conroy, is that Gabriel is faced with the intense question of whether his wife, Gretta Conroy, loves him and whether he honestly loves her. Joyce provides substantial information to persuade one to believe that Gabriel does truly love his wife. Even though it is made evident to the reader that Gabriel possesses such devotion and adoration for Gretta, Michael diverts Gabriels confidence in his love, causing Gabriel†¦show more content†¦Gabriel becomes distraught at the revelation of her statement. He also wonders why this important detail of Grettas life was not brought to his attention at an earlier point. Gabriels recognition that he has been excluded from what he believes to be the deepest experience of Grettas life now becomes the deepest experience of his life. Grettas reaction to his questions about her first love causes Gabriel to become overwhelmed by Michael Fureys control over him. Gabriel by his ideas, his tastes, and his sensitivities has been isolated from others but always found solace in his self-esteem. Michael Furey has destroyed this. The tears gathered more thickly in his eyes and in the particular darkness he imagined he saw a young man standing under a dripping tree (Joyce 182). Answers: 1.Price Elasticity of Demand Price elasticity of demand gauges the responsiveness of demand after an alteration in the price. According to the law of demand, a hike in the price of product results in a decline in the quantity purchased. The price elasticity of demand complements this understanding by revealing how much the amount purchased will fall due to a price increase(Frank, 2015). When setting the price of a commodity, the producer has to consider the price elasticity of demand to comprehend the possible effects of the price change. Therefore, lowering or increasing the price will significantly depend on whether the demand for the product is inelastic or elastic. Inelastic Demand If the demand for good or service is price inelastic, then a large shift in the price results in smaller variation in the demand. In the case of such products, the customers are less sensitive to changes in the price. Those commodities that are addictive, essential or lack substitutes are classified under this category. The purchasers will continue to procure relatively the same quantity even if the price changes(Gillespie, 2014). As a result, the producer can maximize the revenue by increasing the price of a product whose demand is price inelastic. On the graph one below, an increase in the price of a product from 10 U.S Dollars to 20 U.S dollars causes a slight fall in quantity purchased, that is, from 10 units to 8 units. In this situation, the producer will earn more revenue at a price of 20 U.S dollars. For such goods, the clients are extremely responsive to shifts in the prices. This phenomenon is tied to several reasons. For example, if the consumers can easily find a substitute then they will have small tolerance for price increment. Furthermore, if the good or service is not essential, then the users will be highly responsive to price fluctuations(McTaggart, Findlay, Parkin, 2015). Therefore, a producer can increase the revenue for such product by reducing the price. On the graph two below, if the producer decreases the price from 13 to 8 U.S Dollars, the quantity demanded will increase from 4 to 12 units. Therefore, at a price of 8, the business will generate more revenue. Graph 2: Elastic Demand 2.Comparative Advantage and Absolute Advantage Comparative advantage denotes the capacity of the country to produce certain product at lower opportunity cost in comparison to another country. The opportunity cost of generating a particular commodity is comparable to the potential advantage that could have been attained by selecting an alternative. If a countrys opportunity cost of manufacturing a product is lower compared to another nations opportunity cost of generating similar item using the same resources, then the country is said to have a comparative advantage(Krugman, Obstfeld, Melitz, 2015). As a result, trading is mutually advantageous for countries. On the contrary, absolute advantage denotes a scenario where a country can manufacture goods and services at a reduced cost per unit than another country. Apart from high efficiencies, absolute advantage can also arise from countrys natural endowment(Sloman, Wride, Garratt, 2015). For example, consider two countries, Saudi Arabia and Nigeria. Mining oil in Saudi Arabia involves much simpler processes like drilling a hole. However, in Nigeria, substantial exploration and expensive technologies are needed for drilling and extraction.
